Why getting life insurance with epilepsy feels hard

You've probably been here before. Long forms, personal questions, and then a decline, or a quote that didn't reflect years of managing your condition well.

Most insurance systems weren't built for epilepsy. When the computer sees the word seizure, it often stops reading. It doesn't ask when your last seizure was, whether your medication is working, or how long you've been living well with your condition.

Many people with epilepsy quietly assume they can't get cover, or that it would cost a fortune. In our experience, that's often not true.

We know which insurers will look at your situation properly. That's the whole point of us.

The protection you need for a secure future

    Life insurance with epilepsy

A tax-free lump sum for your family if you die during the policy term. For many people with well-controlled epilepsy, this is more achievable and more affordable than they expect.

    Income protection

A monthly income if illness or injury stops you working. Underwriting is stricter with epilepsy and some policies carry conditions, so we'll always be straight with you about what's realistic before you apply.

    Critical illness cover

A lump sum if you're diagnosed with a serious illness covered by the policy. Availability depends on your seizure history. We'll tell you honestly what's on the table.

You shouldn't be written off because you live with epilepsy

    If you're:

    • Frustrated after being declined
    • Worried about how your family would cope without your income
    • Putting it off because you dread the forms and the questions
    • Angry at a quote that ignored years of good control

What insurers want to know about your epilepsy

Insurers don't all treat epilepsy the same way, and that's exactly why choosing the right one matters. The things that genuinely influence an application are:

    • When your last seizure was. Seizure-free time is your strongest asset. The longer it's been, the stronger your position, and well-controlled epilepsy can achieve standard or near-standard terms with some insurers.
    • How often seizures happen. Someone with a handful of seizures a year is assessed very differently from someone with frequent ones.
    • The type of seizures. Whether you lose consciousness matters to underwriters.
    • Your medication. Stable, consistent treatment on the same medication reads well. Recent changes usually prompt more questions.
    • How long you've been diagnosed. A long track record of managing your condition counts in your favour.
    • Hospital admissions. Recent seizure-related admissions will affect terms; older ones matter much less.

None of these decide the outcome on their own. One insurer's no is not every insurer's no, and our job is knowing the difference.

Meet the people behind More Than Epilepsy

We're Andy, Sam and Luke, the Stevens family, born and raised in Kent. We've spent years helping people with medical conditions get life insurance that treats them fairly, after hearing too many stories of people being overcharged or turned away by insurers who didn't understand them.

More Than Epilepsy exists because people living with epilepsy face that problem constantly, and often feel like they're being a nuisance for even asking. You're not. You'll always speak to a named UK-based adviser, never a call centre.

    Our family, looking after yours.

Thousands of people across the UK have trusted us with their cover. More Than Epilepsy is a trading style of More Than Money Ltd, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
